Today, the world seems to be one giant infrastructure construction site.
McKinsey reports that the world invests over US$ 2.5 trillion a year on road, rail, airports, ports, power, water and telecommunications infrastructure and is struggling to meet demand.
Construction output will grow by 85 percent to US$ 15.5 trillion worldwide by 2030, according Global Construction 2030, a report by Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics. China, US and India will lead the way but by no means will they be alone.
In fact, we already see evidence that these forecasts may be conservative.
Take for example, China’s ambitious Belt and Road infrastructure plan, this century’s Silk Road. This huge project involves massive investments in land and sea links with China’s global trading partners. So far, 70 nations have agreed to cooperate in the plan and China has already committed US$ 1 trillion to the project.
This is but the tip of the iceberg.
For the world’s major engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) groups, cross-border joint ventures, strategic multi-national alliances, complex funding & logistical arrangements, are a way of life.
So too is another challenge – finding the talent to execute projects successfully, safely, responsibly, on time and within budget.
Until the best available project engineering, construction and supporting professional services team is assembled, in place and on time, nothing gets built. Or the delays to the construction schedule will certainly be extremely costly and reputation damaging.
To exacerbate the problem, the global pool of available project development and execution talent is shrinking.
Identifying, assessing, attracting and retaining the experienced leaders needed to design and build these mammoth infrastructure projects which typically carry great financial, environmental and security risks, is a daily priority for project sponsors and HR/Talent Teams around the world.
