NHS (National Health Service) by Jim Morrison

January 2008: (Jim is an UK-based member of the Cornerstone “family” and works extensively with the NHS and the wider healthcare sector)
The largest employer in Europe is the British National Health Service (NHS) with over 1 million employees – indeed I am told it is the third largest employer in the world (after the Chinese Army and Indian Railways!).

An organisation of such immense size – and nature – touches the lives of almost every person living in the UK. It is, therefore, no surprise that as an executive recruiter (or, to use the populist term, head-hunter) I devote a large part of my time to the NHS – to helping “business units” build the top teams which will enable them to achieve their objectives.

Working with the NHS brings real pleasure and satisfaction. The people I meet are bright, personable and highly committed – not perhaps the image portrayed by an often-hostile media but certainly my personal experience. They are always under the spotlight and work under the most intense pressure – they are literally making life and death decisions.

My experience (over 20 years as a head-hunter); my knowledge of the NHS (many years building networks and helping NHS organisations) and the private sector; and my track record of success (the last three years having delivered 100% success at my panels), all combine to enable me to engage with NHS clients with a high level of confidence that I can very effectively help them.

But don’t just take my word for it. Here are the thoughts of some of my clients.

“We wanted to be sure we had a strong choice between the best the NHS could offer and adaptable candidates from the private sector. Jim fully understood this brief and his understanding of both the NHS and the private sector was a real advantage. He delivered a strong shortlist, which included a CFO from a well-known multinational company. All panelled candidates were appointable and we were delighted with the service we received.”
Mike Deegan, Chief Executive, Central Manchester & Manchester Children’s Hospitals NHS Trust

“We turned to Jim when we needed to strengthen our Executive Team. The outcome actually exceeded our expectations with the recruitment of an exceptional person. His approach was very thorough and professional with a clear understanding of our needs. I would have no hesitation in engaging Jim again when we next need to strengthen our team.”
Jim Mackey, Chief Executive, Northumbria NHS Foundation Trust

“On a range of assignments Jim has consistently provided a first class service to our organisation, built upon a sound understanding of our requirements, thorough research in the market and a determination to give of his best for the client.”
Peter Morris, Chief Executive, University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust
