Ian S Lydall
Board adviser and independent director
Ian retired from PwC Vietnam on 30 June 2015 after 35 years with the PwC network. He has since embarked on a career as a board adviser and independent director, as Strategic Business Development Adviser to Talentnet Corporation, Chairman of a non-life insurance company in Vietnam and director of the largest bank in Cambodia. Through these roles he uses his 40 years of professional experience, including 15 in Vietnam, built up through contributing to the success of PwC Vietnam and to client companies and institutions at board and senior management level.
Ian was the CEO and General Director of PwC Vietnam from 2001 to 2009 after which he was appointed as Chairman of the company until his retirement in 2015. He was a PwC partner for 25 years and has 40 years professional experience, 35 of which have been with PwC, working for 20 years in the UK, 2 in the Sultanate of Oman, 3 in Southern Africa and 15 in South East Asia, based in Vietnam. Ian has advised large and medium sized international and local companies and institutions, mainly at board and senior management level. This broad and in depth experience of running a company and serving clients in many different countries has enabled Ian to develop insights into ways of working with people and how best to contribute to their professional development.
Ian has run professional development courses for boards, management and students, with a range of subjects spanning soft skills and more technical areas. These have included helping others to develop and hone leadership skills, negotiation and interpersonal skills. In addition he has been the coach and mentor for many partners and senior members of PwC, providing support and direction to enable those under his guidance to achieve greater success. He has done this by drawing on and sharing his personal and professional experiences and always being available to counsel through an open door policy.
Ian has been personally involved in the recruitment of partners, managers, staff and students for PwC in the UK and Vietnam over a 30 year period. This has varied from leading programmes to recruit up to 100 new students to identifying, assessing and interviewing potential partners and senior managers. He has also assisted several clients in identifying and recruiting managers into senior finance positions.
Ian’s technical experience has been as adviser and auditor for leading clients in each country he has served in. In Vietnam, he has advised foreign companies on investment and trading opportunities in Vietnam and he was the lead audit partner and adviser to some of the major companies on the Vietnam Stock Exchanges and to companies quoted on the London Stock Exchanges.
Other relevant experience
Ian was Chairman of the British Business Group in Vietnam from 2002 to 2006 and a board member from 2001 to 2013. He is the contact member in Vietnam for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales, actively promoting the Institute in-country.
